Preface:

 

Yangtze River (Long River, Changjiang) is the longest River in Asia, 3rd longest river in the world (behind The Nile, and The Amazon). It is totally extends 6397 kilometers, with drainage area of 1.8 million square kilometers.

Yangtze River originates from Jianggediru Glaciers, Geladaindong Snow Mountain, Nyenchen Tonglha Mountains, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of Qinghai Province and merged into East Sea from Shanghai.

Along with Yellow River (Huang He), they were both considered to be the cradle of Chinese civilization and mother of all Chinese.

       Populated 190 millions, Shanghai is the most prosperous city and one of the 7th Municipality Directly Under The Central Government in mainland China. Served as the financial center, trade center and shipping center of China, this dynamic city unclose the bright future of China.

 

The Bund & Nanjing Road

 

       The Bund located in the city center of Shanghai, along the Huangpu River (sub branch of Yangtze River), it is also been called 1st of Zhongshandong Lu, with 1.5 kilometers long, this area full of Gothic, Roman and Baroque style building. It is the scenery line of Shanghai, and the mark of Shanghai. 

       In the early 1930s, the bund is just like the Wall Street in China, full of Banks, securities, department stores, it was then the financial center of all Asia. 

       Nanjing Road is the main business center for Shanghai, and also the leader of the department store and the Retail business of China. it is the first city that use the escalator in the store, the first city that introduce the four biggest department store from overseas into China and the first city that use air-con in the store.

 

Chinese Acrobats

 

       According to the archaeology, Acrobats in China can be trace back to 2000 years ago, that proves the passion and talent of Chinese people to acrobats. Shanghai is one of the hometowns of the modern acrobats; Shanghai Acrobats Team has won hundreds of golden prize in the world Acrobats Festival and donated many new technology and programs to the world acrobats

 

Oriental Pearl Tower

 

       Like the ‘Black Pearl’ to Captain Jack, Oriental Pearl is the proud to the Shanghainese too; it is the key evidence that proved Shanghai already international metropolitans in Asia and in the World.

         This tower was built in 1994, with 467.9 meters high; this is now the highest tower in Asia and 3rd highest in the world. Take the high-speed lift; at 267 meters high, there you will chose to have dinner at the highest restaurant in Asia, and continue, you will finally get the the 360 meters point, where one can have a fantastical panoramic view of Shanghai by day or night.

Shanghai Museum

 

       Shanghai Museum originally was built in 1952, in 1992, the government decided to move the museum to the city center.

       Served as one of the very important international port and Financial Center in old China, Shanghai Museum has now more than 120,000 pieces of antiques that reflect many aspects of Shanghai from the pre-History to today’s life.

 

Jade Buddha Temple

 

       Situated in the north of Shanghai, Jade Buddha Temple is a Song Dynasty style building for the Buddhism which was first built in 1882.

       A respect Buddhist master from Putuo Mountain, Huigen, after his pilgrimage from Tibet, via India to Myanmar, he decided to use the most precious material: Jade, to carve the Buddha images to bring them back to Putuao mountain: birthplace of his religious life, to show his loyalty. After finished, he left one piece of Jade sitting Buddha and one piece of Jade laying Buddha for Shanghai to thank the millionaire who donates him the money to do this thing. Thus, this temple was named the “Jade Buddha Temple”

 

Mandarin Yu Garden & Old Town of Shanghai

 

       Madarin Yu Garden is a typical Chinese Garden with small pond, Fake Mountain, pavilions, houses and zigzag bridges. This garden was built in about 400 years ago by an officer as a present for his father.

       Yu Garden is now a place where you will not just see the art of Chinese garden but also some kind of City market, where you may enjoy also the Shanghai Snack food and the typical souvenirs from Shanghai.

Yangtze Cruise

 

       Yangtze Cruise, generally means the cruise from Shanghai to Chongqing, which is the major part of the Yangtze, along this cruise, you will see the most beautiful part of this long river: The Three Gorges. Beside, Three Gorges Dam has become another new scenic spot along the river. 

After the Opium War, the Americans brought their ship experience from Mississippi River; open the ship route from Shanghai to Wuhan for opium business mainly. Then in the late 19th century, westerners came into China, made Shanghai the Fairyland of the Adventurers, shipping between Shanghai and Chongqing had a booming development. 1983, the running of the “Yangtze Jiang’ ship marked the formally tourist shipping began in China.

        Kunming

 

       Situated in the middle of Yunnan province and southwest of China, Kunming is now the capital city of Yunnan Province that covers about 12,000 sq kilometers. According to the recent census, the population of Kunming has reach to 5,800,000, among this, about 3,000,000 in the down area and 2,800,000 in the urban area. Kunming is located in the basin that links to the Yunnan-Guizhou High plateau, featured about 1894 m high above sea level. Since the special geographically location, that makes Kunming has spring-like temperature climate all year round, therefore, Kunming also known as ‘Spring City’ or ‘the City of Eternal Spring’. Kunming is the transportation hub in southwest China, it now has developed the road that directly connect to Thailand via Laos and Burma, with the international airport that has developed almost all air route within China, and many countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia has developed the air route to Kunming.

Shilin (stone forest)

 

Shilin (literally "Stone Forest") is a notable set of karst formations in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, approximately 85 km from the city of Kunming. The tall rocks seem to emanate from the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like trees made of stone, creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. Shilin National Park covers an area of 350 square km and is divided into seven scenic areas with names like Major & Minor Stone Forests, Naigu Stone Forest, Zhiyun Cave, Qifeng Cave, Lake Changhu (literally "Long Lake"), Lake Yuehu (literally "Moon Lake") and the waterfalls of "Da Dieshui". The formations are believed to be over 270 million years old. They are a tourist attraction for both foreign and domestic tourists, with bus tours taking tourists there from Kunming. There are also hotels in the area. Each year around the 24th and 25th day of the sixth lunar month, many Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival, which features folk dances and wrestling competitions.

Description:

 

Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture

 

Situated about 340 km to the northwest of Kunming, on the 2000 m plateau, located on a fertile plateau between the Cangshan mountains to the west and Erhai lake to the east. It has traditionally been settled by the Bai and Yi minorities. It is also the capital of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture 

Dali is the ancient capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao, which flourished in the area during the 8th and 9th centuries, and the Kingdom of Dali, which reigned from 937-1253. Then Kublai Khan put this kingdom into his empire as an province Yunnan, and moved the capital city from Dali to Kunming. Dali is also famous for the many types of marble it produces, which are used primarily in construction and for decorative objects. In fact, Dali is so famous for the stone that the name of marble in Chinese is literally "Dali Stone"

Dali is now a major tourist destination, along with Lijiang, for both domestic and international tourists.

 

Erhai Lake

 

       (Etymologically Ear-shaped Sea because of its effective shape)

Erhai Lake was also known as Yeyuze or Kunming Lake in ancient times. The lake used to be a royal deer ranch for the Nanzhao Kingdom.

Erhai Lake is situated at 1,972 m above sea level. In size, the North-South length of the lake is 40 km and the East-West width is roughly 7-8 km. Its area is 250 km2, making it the second largest highland lake of China, after Dianchi Lake. Its circumference reaches 116 km; its average depth is of 11 m and the total storage capacity of 2.5 billion m3.

The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Islands on the lake are also available to visits (including Jinsuo Island (Golden Shuttle Island),Xiaoputuo Island, Guanyin Ge and Nanzhao Fengqing Island).

 

The Three Pagodas

 

The Three Pagodas are built in ChongSheng Temple, which is considered to be the national temple during the NanZhao Kingdom period, for there are 6 kings gave up being emperor instead of coming to this temple became a monk, near the old town of Dali,  dating from the time of the Nanzhao kingdom and Kingdom of Dali. It is located about 1.5 km (0.9) miles north of scenic Dali, They are at the east foot of the tenth peak of the massive Cangshan Mountains and face the west shore of the Erhai Lake of the ancient Dali town.

The main pagoda, known as Qianxun Pagoda (pinyin Qian Xun Ta), reportedly built during 824-840 AD by the king of the Nanzhao state, is 69.6 meters (227 feet) high and is one of the tallest pagodas in China’s history. The other two sibling pagodas, built about one hundred years later, stand to the northwest and southwest of Qianxun Pagoda. They are 42.19 meters (140 feet) high. 

 

Old Town of Dali (aka: the foreigners’ street)

 

The old town of weathered gray granite stands at 2,100 meters on a long, narrow rice plain between the Cangshan Mountains and the Erhai Lake, a natural configuration that seems specially designed for a good, bountiful life. Format of the old town is like a chessboard with four gates guarding in the directions of east, south, west and north, a design that was adopted by most towns in ancient China.

 

DAY 11 Dali-Lijiang        2300m

Xizhou

 

       20 km from Dali to the north, this is a village that still remain the biggest scale of the Bais’ traditional construction style, that described as ‘Three rooms with one mirror wall, square shaped house with 5 court yards.’ Which means that, all the traditional house of the Bai people are orientated north and south, with rooms scattered around 3 sides facing the sun-rising direction, and a crystal white wall against the sun, so that, in the morning, sun can come into all rooms, and in the afternoon, the sunlight will light up the wall, then the wall will reflect the sunlight into rooms. Then, the rooms and wall separated this big yard into 5 parts, one big one in the middle of the house and 4 small ones at the four corners.

 

Zhoucheng town

 

      Zhoucheng town located in the 23 kilometers of north of Dali Ancient city. It is the biggest Bai minority village in Dali with 1500 families.

      Here you may see the most typical and best preserved Dali Bai minority’s residential house. And also, Zhoucheng is the traditional hometown of tie-dye. Many workshops of tie-dye has made this town a very interesting place to discovery and stay.

Lijiang

 

       Located in the northwest of Yunnan, about 650 kilometers away from Kunming, Lijiang is one of the most famous cities in China and the main residential area for the Naxi people. It is a prefecture-level city with an area of 21,219 square kilometers and a population of 1,137,600 as of 2005.

 

DaYan Old town

 

The world famous Old Town of Lijiang is located in Lijiang City. It is aUNESCO Heritage Site.The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road. The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Naxi people.

 

Naxi Orchestra

 

       the Naxi Orchestra is a Taoist ceremonial instrumental music accompanied with chanting that was introduced to Yunnan from mainland China in Tang Dynasty some 1200 years ago. This music is currently nowhere to find in the mainland but still survives all over Yunnan, the most famous of which is now in Lijiang. There are dozens of troupes locally, and the one with the most fame is conducted by Mr. Xuan Ke, an old and jolly Naxi musician.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

 

       The holy mountain for the Naxi people, the highest mountain in Lijiang, and the ‘tail of Himalaya’, jade dragon snow mountain is the most famous place for travel in Lijiang, its peak, ‘Shanzidou’ is 5596m high above sea level, and never been successfully climbed. Local nomads used to graze on the mountain, now the main grazing place has become the major tourist destination, Spruce Meadow, Yak Meadow, White Water terrace and Snow Mountain Golf course are the main destination for visit.

 

Baisha Fresco and Baisha Village

 

       a small village located about 8 km to the north of the Old town. Baisha is an authentic village where Naxi people still live in peacefully and happily. The most famous place in the village for visit can be the Baisha Fresco, a painting on the wall that finished about 600 years ago, but partly had been destroyed during the culture revolution. This painting has perfectly reflect how the three different religions lived together very well—Daoism, Mahayana, Tibetan Buddhism

 

Black Dragon Pond (HeiLongTan)

 

       This park located in the north of the old town about 1.5 km, which is a very beautiful and big park, where the source of the water flowing though the old town, with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the background, Black dragon pond is really a picturesque place in Lijiang. The Dongba Museum in the park is the best place for one who wants to have a deep understand of the local shaman religion—Dongba Religion.

 

DAY 13 Lijiang-Shigu-Tiger Leaping Gorge-Lijiang

Stone Drum Town (Shigu)

 

       Yangtze River starts from the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, and flowing from north to south, till it arrives in this small town, it made a turn, change its direction from north and south into west and east. Stone Drum Town is the best place to see this trace changing of the Yangtze River, which local people call it ‘the first bend of Yangtze River

 

Tiger Leaping Gorge (HuTiaoXia)

 

       This gorge is the most famous and spectacular gorge in Yunnan, it is about 60 km north from Lijiang, where is also considered to be the border of Lijiang and Shangri-la. This gorge is formed by two mountains—the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Haba Snow Mountain, with the river flowing in between called the Golden Sand River. This gorge is about 3700m from the top of the mountain to the water surface, and about 15 km in length. It is said that once, in order to escape from the chasing of a hunter, the tiger has to leaping from this side to the other side of the river, the rock that the tiger used now is become the core of this gorge—the ‘tiger leaping stone’ also called the ‘upper tiger leaping gorge’, which is only 30 meters in between the two sides of the river.

       There are normally 2 trails to visit tiger leaping gorge, one is for the regular bus drive tour, it is the lower trail, the other one is called the upper trail, where is one of the most famous trekking route in the world.

       Along the Li River, Guilin is one of the first cities that opened for the foreigners visitors back to 1950s for its beautiful water, beautiful hills and beautiful city, nice and quiet town with Karst Rock Formation hills, presents you the most picturesque rural scenery.

Li River Cruise

 

       Sitting in the small machine boat, drive on the Li River, you will find the whole trip is along the extremely green paddies and Karst Formation Hills and small wooden boat passing by. If you want to fully merge into the nature, this is it.

 

Yangshuo

 

       After few hours of the cruise, you will get to Yangshuo town, which is the core of the picturesque scenery of Guilin; this is the best place to see the rice paddies, the hills, the water and the people. Also, the foreigners’ street gives you a good chance to buy small souvenirs.  

 

DAY 16 Guilin/Hongkong
