       Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou are the main provinces consist of the Southwest China, in terms of the ethnic minority. More than half of the minorities in China are settled here from the pre-history period. And, since the comparatively insolated geological environment of these 3 provinces, majority of the minority tribes and people still follow the old way of life of all aspects, which provides us a good and real chance to see the authentic life of the minorities.

Kunming

 

Serving as the capital of Yunnan, Kunming is historically and culturally renowned throughout the country. It is the center of politics, economy, culture, science and technology in Yunnan. With an annual average temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, it is well known as the City of Eternal Spring without bitter cold in winter and intense heat in summer.

 

Yunnan Provincial Museum

 

      A monumental Russian-style building, Yunnan Provincial Museum houses a collection of textiles, costumes, handcrafts and artifacts of Yunnan’s many ethnic minority groups.

 

DAY 02 Kunming

Western hill Dianchi Lake and Dragon gate          2200m (6600ft)

 

Western hill forest reserve located about 7 kilometers in the west of Kunming, and close to the east Shore of Dianchi Lake. See from the distance, it just looks like a girl lying there with a long hair, therefore, local people named this mountain as ‘sleeping beauty’.

The western hell covers Huating temple, Taihua temple, Sanqing Ge and Dragon gate grotto.

       The Dragon Gate in the Western Hills is close to the west shore of the Dianchi Lake. It consists of the Sanqing Temple Complex and the Dragon Gate Grotto Complex.

The Dragon Gate Grotto Complex, on the other hand, includes Lanhaichu, the Ciyun Cave, the Yunhua Cave and the Datian Pavilion. It was accomplished through 72 years of hard work (1781-1853).It is both the summit of the grotto and the highlight of the grotto as well.

The elevation of the Dragon Gate is over 2,300 meters, 300 meters higher than the water surface of the Dianchi Lake.

       DianChi Lake is a freshwater fault lake at 1,886.5 m (6,189 ft) above sea level. The lake covers 298 km2 (115 sq mi). It is 39 km (24 mi) long from north to south, and the average depth is 4.4 m (14 ft). It is the eighth largest lake in China and the largest in Yunnan Province.

 

Yunnan Nationalities Museum

 

Yunnan Nationalities Museum prepared its start in October, 1998 and was opened to the public in November 9th, 1995.

Yunnan Nationalities Museum, located in the National Resort zone of Kunming by Dian lake, the museum has a total coverage of 130,000 square meters and built-up area of 30,000 square meters, consists of building for display, demonstration, storage, research and development uses. The whole architecture looks like a courtyard with winding corridors featuring the local and minority nationalities’ styles.

Including 17 nationalities, Yunnan Nationalities Museum assembled 23 assistant research fellows and 28 lecturers. It consists of 5 sections: Administration Department, Exhibition Department, Cultural Relics Department, Research Department, Scientific Education Department, and Development Department. The whole collection of the museum reached to over20, 000. The museum has an exhibitions focusing on specific subjects. In addition, the museum is not only a hall for showing the nationalities cultures, but also a beautiful scenic spot and ideal conference center. It has multi-function conference hall which is equipped with simultaneous interpretation system. Book store, handicraft shop, tea house and Artist studios or galleries are available for entertainment. Wish you a good time in Yunnan Nationalities Museum. Description:

Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture

 

Situated about 340 km to the northwest of Kunming, on the 2000 m plateau, located on a fertile plateau between the Cangshan mountains to the west and Erhai Lake to the east. It has traditionally been settled by the Bai and Yi minorities. It is also the capital of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture 

Dali is the ancient capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao, which flourished in the area during the 8th and 9th centuries, and the Kingdom of Dali, which reigned from 937-1253. Then Kublai Khan put this kingdom into his empire as an province Yunnan, and moved the capital city from Dali to Kunming. Dali is also famous for the many types of marble it produces, which are used primarily in construction and for decorative objects. In fact, Dali is so famous for the stone that the name of marble in Chinese is literally "Dali Stone"

Dali is now a major tourist destination, along with Lijiang, for both domestic and international tourists.

 

Erhai Lake

 

       (Etymologically Ear-shaped Sea because of its effective shape)

Erhai Lake was also known as Yeyuze or Kunming Lake in ancient times. The lake used to be a royal deer ranch for the Nanzhao Kingdom.

Erhai Lake is situated at 1,972 m above sea level. In size, the North-South length of the lake is 40 km and the East-West width is roughly 7-8 km. Its area is 250 km2, making it the second largest highland lake of China, after Dianchi Lake. Its circumference reaches 116 km, its average depth is of 11 m and the total storage capacity of 2.5 billion m3.

The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Islands on the lake are also available to visits (including Jinsuo Island (Golden Shuttle Island),Xiaoputuo Island, Guanyin Ge and Nanzhao Fengqing Island).

 

The Three Pagodas

 

The Three Pagodas are built in ChongSheng Temple, which is considered to be the national temple during the NanZhao Kingdom period, for there are 6 kings gave up being emperor instead of coming to this temple became a monk, near the old town of Dali,  dating from the time of the Nanzhao kingdom and Kingdom of Dali. It is located about 1.5 km (0.9) miles north of scenic Dali, They are at the east foot of the tenth peak of the massive Cangshan Mountains and face the west shore of the Erhai Lake of the ancient Dali town.

The main pagoda, known as Qianxun Pagoda (pinyin Qian Xun Ta), reportedly built during 824-840 AD by the king of the Nanzhao state, is 69.6 meters (227 feet) high and is one of the tallest pagodas in China’s history. The other two sibling pagodas, built about one hundred years later, stand to the northwest and southwest of Qianxun Pagoda. They are 42.19 meters (140 feet) high. 

 

Old Town of Dali (aka: the foreigners’ street)

 

The old town of weathered gray granite stands at 2,100 meters on a long, narrow rice plain between the Cangshan Mountains and the Erhai Lake, a natural configuration that seems specially designed for a good, bountiful life. Format of the old town is like a chessboard with four gates guarding in the directions of east, south, west and north, a design that was adopted by most towns in ancient China.

Description:

 

Shibaoshan

 

Dali was a ancient kingdom in northwest of Yunnan, back to 1000 years ago, this was the strongest kingdom in the southwest of China, and Buddhism was so popular that even involve the rulers, it was said that more than 6 kings who gave up

the throne to become a sincere Buddhist monk. For this reason, there are millions of construction was built involved with Buddhist then.

     This is one of the Buddhist site with a temple and Grotto, hundreds of steps, you will see the Baoxiang Temple, which was built on the vertical rocks, and look from the distance, and its just like hanging on the cliff. And the nice and hard-working grottos scattered all around this hill where the temple was.

 

Sideng Street

 

Ancient Tea-Horse Road led from southeast of Yunnan, border of China and Laos to Lhasa and extended to India, Europe. Like the Silk Road in north China, this is not just a road for cargo, but also a road of lifeline and road of communication for the south China world in the old times.

      Not many site left after a long term of development for the pursuit of the so called ‘modernization and civilization’ or the tourist industry. Luckily, Sideng Street is one of the small stop for the Ancient Tea-Horse Road that still remain the quiet, unsophisticated, peaceful and tradition. 

Lijiang

 

       Located in the northwest of Yunnan, about 650 kilometers away from Kunming, Lijiang is one of the most famous cities in China and the main residential area for the Naxi people. It is a prefecture-level city with an area of 21,219 square kilometers and a population of 1,137,600 as of 2005.

DaYan Old town

 

The world famous Old Town of Lijiang is located in Lijiang City. It is aUNESCO Heritage Site.The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road. The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Naxi people.

 

Black Dragon Pond (HeiLongTan)

 

       This park located in the north of the old town about 1.5 km, which is a very beautiful and big park, where the source of the water flowing though the old town, with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the background, Black dragon pond is really a picturesque place in Lijiang. The Dongba Museum in the park is the best place for one who wants to have a deep understand of the local shaman religion—Dongba Religion.

 

Naxi Orchestra

 

       the Naxi Orchestra is a Taoist ceremonial instrumental music accompanied with chanting that was introduced to Yunnan from mainland China in Tang Dynasty some 1200 years ago. This music is currently nowhere to find in the mainland but still survives all over Yunnan, the most famous of which is now in Lijiang. There are dozens of troupes locally, and the one with the most fame is conducted by Mr. Xuan Ke, an old and jolly Naxi musician.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

 

       The holy mountain for the Naxi people, the highest mountain in Lijiang, and the ‘tail of Himalaya’, jade dragon snow mountain is the most famous place for travel in Lijiang, its peak, ‘Shanzidou’ is 5596m high above sea level, and never been successfully climbed. Local nomads used to graze on the mountain, now the main grazing place has become the major tourist destination, Spruce Meadow, Yak Meadow, White Water terrace and Snow Mountain Golf course are the main destination for visit.

 

Jade Lake Village and Dr. Joseph Rocks former Residence

 

       Nice and quiet Naxi Village near the Lijiang Dayan Old Town, use to be chosen by Dr. Joseph Rock as his permanent house for his 10 years of staying in Lijiang. Dr. Joseph was born in Austria, graduated from the University of Hawaii, and then became a photographer, botanist and ethnologist; he went around Tibet, Yunnan, Myanmar and Nepal back in 1920s to research the nature and the people, and wrote articles for the National Geography Magazine. He was one of the first westerners that introduced this place to the world.

 

Baisha Fresco and Baisha Village

 

       a small village located about 8 km to the north of the Old town. Baisha is an authentic village where Naxi people still live in peacefully and happily. The most famous place in the village for visit can be the Baisha Fresco, a painting on the wall that finished about 600 years ago, but partly had been destroyed during the culture revolution. This painting has perfectly reflect how the three different religions lived together very well—Daoism, Mahayana, Tibetan Buddhism

 

DAY 07 Lijiang-Kunming-Stone Forest-Kunming-Anshun

 

Main Activities: Fly from Kunming to Lijiang [45 min]

                            Visit Stone Forest [1 hour]

                            Drive back to Kunming; get on the train to Anshun [at 20:00]

Description:

 

Stone Forest

 

Shilin (literally "Stone Forest") is a notable set of karst formations in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, approximately 85 km from the city of Kunming. The tall rocks seem to emanate from the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like trees made of stone, creating the illusion of a forest made of stone.

Shilin National Park covers an area of 350 square km and is divided into seven scenic areas with names like Major & Minor Stone Forests, Naigu Stone Forest, Zhiyun Cave, Qifeng Cave, Lake Changhu (literally "Long Lake"), Lake Yuehu (literally "Moon Lake") and the waterfalls of "Da Dieshui". The formations are believed to be over 270 million years old. They are a tourist attraction for both foreign and domestic tourists, with bus tours taking tourists there from Kunming. There are also hotels in the area.

Each year around the 24th and 25th day of the sixth lunar month, many Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival, which features folk dances and wrestling competitions.

 

DAY 08 Anshun-Guiyang

Description:

Guizhou Province

 

Guizhou province is called "Qian" or "Gui" for its short forms. Located on the eastern slope of Yunnan--Guizhou Plateau, Guizhou borders provinces (region and municipality) of Hunan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan and Chongqing to the east, south, west, and north respectively. The province becomes an important access to the sea and a transportation hub for Southwest China.

The province covers an area of 176,100 square kilometers, accounting for 1.8% of the national area. The altitude is 1,100 meters on average. Mountains and hills make up 92.5% of the total provincial area, of which 61.9% is dominated by karst landform. Guizhou is one of the most developed karst landform regions in the world.

 

Huangguoshu Waterfall

 

       Situated in about 45 km from Anshun City, Huangguoshu Waterfall ranked the largest waterfall in China. Huangguoshu means ‘Yellow Fruit Trees’, this waterfall is on the Baishui river, which is averagely about 20 meters wide, during the wet season, it can reach to 30-40 meters wide. Thanks to the tourism, this waterfall is so far only used for visit.

 

Bu Yi Minority

 

       Populated about 2.5 million and 95% of them now live within the boundary of Guizhou Province.

      

DAY 09 Guiyang-Kaili

       Kaili Museum located exactly in the downtown area, where is a very typical local minority style building, and the permanently exhibitions are mainly the culture geography of all aspects of the ‘Miao’ and the ‘Dong’ minorities. First choice for one who wants to have a deep understanding of the minority of Guizhou Province.

Miao Minority

 

       Miao is an international ethnic group that originated from China. They now live in China, Vietnam and Thailand. In China, they mainly live in Guizhou and Yunnan. According to the recent census, there are totally 8 million of them in China. Guizhou in one of the main gathered place for the Miao People.

       This is an agriculture minority, who are very good at the embroidery and silver crafts, they always like to decorate themselves with 10s of kilos of silver ornaments and self-made embroidery dress in the festival, ceremony and market days. This group of people god-gift artist in cross-stitch work.

 

Shiqing Village

 

       A Miao village where you will witness the talent of the Miao People: how to make the embroidery and brocade

 

Matang Village & Gejie Minority

 

The Gejia (alternatively, Ge Jia) are classified as a subgroup of the Miao ethnic minority, very little is really known about the Gejia, apart from the fact that they specialize in batik, and that they, not unlike the various other ethnic minorities in the region, are fond of colorful clothing, which colorful clothing includes everyday attire as well as festival costumes. Some of the more common items of Gejia batik include women's jackets, coats, dresses and a corset-like vest to be worn over a blouse, while batik suspenders are a typical men's item. Other everyday applications of Gejia batik include curtains, quilt covers, tablecloths and place mats.In addition to being specialists in the art of batik, the Gejia ethnic minority of Matang Village are also skilled at embroidery.

The Dong Minority’s Bridge & Drum

 

       Dong, ‘Kam’ in their own name, is one of the 56 nationalities of China, mainly live in Guizhou and Hunan Province, populated about 2.8 million.

       Their tradition and style of building bridge is very special: ‘Wind and Rain Bridge’ is the name of this bridge, and most special, there is always a big shelter in the middle of the bridge looks like a small house, which provide a place for people passing by to hide from the wind and rain.

       Drum of the Dong are always made by bronze, which can trace back to 2200 years ago, they use them for the big ceremony, festival and sacrifice, it is the symbol of the continue of life and the symbol of Royalty. Worship of the drum makes many villages have a huge Drum in the courtyard of the village, which they call them the ‘Drum Tower’.

 

DAY 13 Sanjiang-Longsheng-Guilin

                            Drive from Longsheng to Guilin [3 hours]

Longsheng Rice Terrace

 

       Small town hide in the deep of the mountain, longsheng presents you the most beautiful rice terrace of Guangxi Province, bamboo house and stone steps surrounded by thousands of hectares of rice paddies, after arrival, you will climb hundreds of steps to the top of the mountain to enjoy the nature and then on the way ,you will see the local minority people with long hair (some can reach to 3 meters long).

Guilin

 

       Along the Li River, Guilin is one of the first cities that opened for the foreigners visitors back to 1950s for its beautiful water, beautiful hills and beautiful city, nice and quiet town with Karst Rock Formation hills, presents you the most picturesque rural scenery.

 

DAY 14 Guilin

 

Main Activities: Cruise on Li River to Yangshuo [4 hours]

                            Drive back from Yangshuo to Guilin [3 hours]

Li River Cruise

 

       Sitting in the small machine boat, drive on the Li River, you will find the whole trip is along the extremely green paddies and Karst Formation Hills and small wooden boat passing by. If you want to fully merge into the nature, this is it.

 

Yangshuo

 

       After few hours of the cruise, you will get to Yangshuo town, which is the core of the picturesque scenery of Guilin; this is the best place to see the rice paddies, the hills, the water and the people. Also, the foreigners’ street gives you a good chance to buy small souvenirs.   

 

DAY 15 Guilin Departure

 

Main Activities: Visit the Reed Flute Cave in the mornig

                            Transfer to Guilin Airport
