Serving as the capital of Yunnan, Kunming is historically and culturally renowned throughout the country. It is the center of politics, economy, culture, science and technology in Yunnan. With an annual average temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, it is well known as the City of Eternal Spring without bitter cold in winter and intense heat in summer.


Yunnan Provincial Museum


      A monumental Russian-style building, Yunnan Provincial Museum houses a collection of textiles, costumes, handcrafts and artifacts of Yunnan’s many ethnic minority groups.

Stone forest, 90 km away from Kunming by driving, as a world natural heritage member, this park covers about 300 square km of the total area with stone column, stone shoots

Western hill Dianchi Lake and Dragon gate          2200m (6600ft)


Western hill forest reserve located about 7 kilometers in the west of Kunming, and close to the east shore of Dianchi lake. See from the distance, it just looks like a girl lying there with a long hair, therefore, local people named this mountain as ‘sleeping beauty’.

The western hell covers Huating temple, Taihua temple, Sanqing Ge and Dragon gate grotto.

       The Dragon Gate in the Western Hills is close to the west shore of the Dianchi Lake. It consists of the Sanqing Temple Complex and the Dragon Gate Grotto Complex.

The Dragon Gate Grotto Complex, on the other hand, includes Lanhaichu, the Ciyun Cave, the Yunhua Cave and the Datian Pavilion. It was accomplished through 72 years of hard work (1781-1853).It is both the summit of the grotto and the highlight of the grotto as well.

The elevation of the Dragon Gate is over 2,300 meters, 300 meters higher than the water surface of the Dianchi Lake.

       DianChi Lake is a freshwater fault lake at 1,886.5 m (6,189 ft) above sea level. The lake covers 298 km2 (115 sq mi). It is 39 km (24 mi) long from north to south, and the average depth is 4.4 m (14 ft). It is the eighth largest lake in China and the largest in Yunnan Province.


Yunnan Nationalities Museum


Yunnan Nationalities Museum prepared its start in October, 1998 and was opened to the public in November 9th, 1995.

Yunnan Nationalities Museum, located in the National Resort zone of Kunming by Dian lake, the museum has a total coverage of 130,000 square meters and built-up area of 30,000 square meters, consists of building for display, demonstration, storage, research and development uses. The whole architecture looks like a courtyard with winding corridors featuring the local and minority nationalities’ styles.

Including 17 nationalities, Yunnan Nationalities Museum assembled 23 assistant research fellows and 28 lecturers. It consists of 5 sections: Administration Department, Exhibition Department, Cultural Relics Department, Research Department, Scientific Education Department, and Development Department. The whole collection of the museum reached to over20, 000. The museum has an exhibitions focusing on specific subjects. In addition, the museum is not only a hall for showing the nationalities cultures, but also a beautiful scenic spot and ideal conference center. It has multi-function conference hall which is equipped with simultaneous interpretation system. Stone Forest


       Shilin (literally "Stone Forest") is a notable set of karst formations in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, approximately 85 km from the city of Kunming. The tall rocks seem to emanate from the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like trees made of stone, creating the illusion of a forest made of stone.

Shilin National Park covers an area of 350 square km and is divided into seven scenic areas with names like Major & Minor Stone Forests, Naigu Stone Forest, Zhiyun Cave, Qifeng Cave, Lake Changhu (literally "Long Lake"), Lake Yuehu (literally "Moon Lake") and the waterfalls of "Da Dieshui". The formations are believed to be over 270 million years old. They are a tourist attraction for both foreign and domestic tourists, with bus tours taking tourists there from Kunming. There are also hotels in the area.

Each year around the 24th and 25th day of the sixth lunar month, many Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival, which features folk dances and wrestling competitions.

The world famous Old Town of Lijiang is located in Lijiang City. It is aUNESCO Heritage Site.The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road. The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Naxi people.


Black Dragon Pond (HeiLongTan)


       This park located in the north of the old town about 1.5 km, which is a very beautiful and big park, where the source of the water flowing though the old town, with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the background, Black dragon pond is really a picturesque place in Lijiang. The Dongba Museum in the park is the best place for one who wants to have a deep understand of the local shaman religion—Dongba Religion.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain


       The holy mountain for the Naxi people, the highest mountain in Lijiang, and the ‘tail of Himalaya’, jade dragon snow mountain is the most famous place for travel in Lijiang, its peak, ‘Shanzidou’ is 5596m high above sea level, and never been successfully climbed. Local nomads used to graze on the mountain, now the main grazing place has become the major tourist destination, Spruce Meadow, Yak Meadow, White Water terrace and Snow Mountain Golf course are the main destination for visit.

Jade Peak Monastery

11 kilometers northwest of Lijiang, the Yufeng (or Jade Peak) Monastery's centerpiece is a 500-year-old camellia tree that boasts ten thousand blossoms from December until March of the following year.

Baisha Fresco and Baisha Village


       a small village located about 8 km to the north of the Old town. Baisha is an authentic village where Naxi people still live in peacefully and happily. The most famous place in the village for visit can be the Baisha Fresco, a painting on the wall that finished about 600 years ago, but partly had been destroyed during the culture revolution. This painting has perfectly reflect how the three different religions lived together very well—Daoism, Mahayana, Tibetan Buddhism


Shuhe Old town


       5 kilometers north of Dayan Old Town, also known as Longquan Cun, similar layouts and scenery to the Dayan Old town. It used to be one of the need stop on the ‘Tea Horse Road’ in the old times, in which, made this small town a prosperous village till now. After the development of the tourism of Lijiang, Shuhe has gain its second life, and now compared with the Dayan Old Town, here is quieter, more peaceful and less tourist.


DAY 05 Lijiang-Stone Drum-Tiger Leaping Gorge-Zhongdian 3300m

Stone Drum County with the view of the first bend of Yangtze River


The village of Stone Drum stands at the First Bend of the Yangzi River, some 70 kilometers west of Lijiang. Approaching to Stone Drum offers a dramatic view of the Yangzi's near-180-degree turn, where the wide, swift waters perform a miraculous about-face. For nearly 20 kilometers the river, first flowing south, then north, runs parallel to itself. Locals say if it were not for their village standing guard at the bend, China would lose the water of the Yangzi to Southeast Asia, like that of the adjacent Mekong and Salween Rivers.


Tiger Leaping Gorge


      The Tiger Leaping Gorge, or Hutiaoxia in Chinese, is the Yangzi's best-known gorge after the Three Gorges in Sichuan and Hubei. Wedged tightly between titanic cliffs, the river is so narrow here, as legend tells us, that a hunted tiger made his escape to the other side in a single bound. Here, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains and the Haba Snow Mountains lean close to each other and a large volume of torrent moving between them cutting deeper and deeper into the bottom of the gorge. In some places there is a drop of 3,000 meters to the water.

Shudu, or where milk gathers in Tibetan, is one of the biggest plateau lakes in Zhongdian. It is situated 35 kilometers in the northeast of the county proper with an elevation of 3705 meters. The Lake is surrounded with deep primeval forests of fir and dragon spruce. The silver birch covering the eastern part of the Lake turns to golden yellow in autumn, providing very photogenic scenes. The natural grassland around the Lake is the best pasture in Zhongdian. At the turn of spring and summer, we may have pastoral scenes of the Lake with herds of sheep and cattle.


Shangri-la (used to called: Zhongdian) County


At 3,160 meters above sea level, Zhongdian (or Gyalthang in Tibetan, and approved by State Council to be renamed Shangri-La County as of late December 2001) lies in a landscape of rolling hills, snow-capped peaks, virgin forests of spruce, pine and meadow dotted with wild flowers and tranquil lakes. The old town, still entirely in local Tibetan style, is in the south of Zhongdian.

Ganden Songzanlin Monastery


Founded in the 17th century during the reign of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama and nicknamed as Lesser Potala Palace by the locals, Ganden Songzanglin Monastery is one of the thirteen Tibetan monasteries in the Kangba Region, where Tibet, Yunnan and Sichuan join. Holding about 700 monks and one living Buddha, the monastery is a must-go in the region.


Pudacuo National Forest Park


       the Pu Da Cuo National Park, which is composed of Bita Lake and Shudu Lake.

Bita Lake is a plateau lake that provide ideal habitat for birds and animals. Rhododendrons are so plentiful in the lake area that in April and May, the Lake is surrounded by flowers in colors of red, pink, white and purple.

Lhasa, Tibet


Situated in the northwest of China, north of Himalaya Mountain, Tibet is the hometown to the Tibetan people, where the highest point of China located and birthplace of Tibetan Buddhism. Potala Palace

The Potala Palace was built by Tubo King Songtsan Gambo in the 7th century as the palace for the Tubo Kings, Which is now a place merged with the function of Tibetan culture, religion, construction and history museum, monastery and tourists attractions.

It underwent renovation during the time of the 5th Dalai Lama Ngawang Lhosang Gyamco in the 17th century. However, the Potala Palace didn't undergo a thorough repair until the 1980s. Standing atop the Red Hill, the Potala Palace was built along the slope of the hill. It extends 360 meters from east to west and 140 meters from south to north. Rising 13 stories, the palace is 115.7 meters tall. Palace walls were erected with granite slabs, the thickest part measuring five meters.

Sera Temple


In the northern suburbs of Lhasa towers the strangely shaped Serawoze Mountain. Sera Monastery lies on the southern slope of this mountain. Covering an area of 114,960 square meters, the monastery is comprised of Coqen Hall, three Zhacang dormitories for monks called Gyi, Mei and Ngaba, and some 30 Kangcun dorms for monks. The area is a Buddhist Mecca and also a favorite scenic spot in Lhasa.


Parkor Street


       A street full of vendors, pilgrims, tourists, monks. Best choice if you want to bring something back as souvenirs, or if you want to find a place to just sit and relax.

Jokhang Temple

The Jokhang Monastery, located in downtown Lhasa, is a Buddhist hall for Tibetan Buddhists and a symbol of unity between the Tibetan and Han peoples. First built in the mid-7th century, the monastery was a temple in the shape of a two-story boat. After repeated expansion in the ensuing centuries, the monastery is now a combination of large buildings covering an area of 25,100 square meters.            The Hall of Sakyamuni is the most important in the monastery. It enshrines a statue of Sakyamuni, which Tang Dynasty Princess Wencheng brought to Lhasa. The city is called Lhasa, meaning "holy land," because of the statue's presence. The statue attracts an endless flow of worshippers every day.

Drepung Monastery

Jamyang Choje, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, founded Drepung Monastery in 1416. It was the world's largest monastery, having over 10,000 monks in residence. In 1530, when the Second Dalai Lama made Ganden Palace his main residence, Drepung monastery became not only the primary residence of the Dalai Lama but also the political base for the Gelug monastic sect.

Norbulingka Monastery

In Tibet, there are many lingka, it actually means ‘Garden’, but not a common garden for the ordinary civilians but usually for the monk official, they like to name their Summer Resort as ‘Lingka’

Norbulingka was located in the west of Potala Palace, it can be the most beautiful one, which was done the 7th Dalai Lama for the purpose of escape from the heat of Summer back to the mid of 18th century.

Palkor Monastery


Palkhor Monastery is a kind of typical Tibetan Buddhism monastery architecture combined stupa and temple, with temples in the stupa, stupas in the temple. The stupas and temples stay harmoniously and bring out the best in each other. Its architecture fully represents a typical style of monasteries from thirteenth century to fifteenth century in Later Tibetan areas, which are also the unique monasteries with both the temple and stupa being kept well today. So it is reputed as a monument of architecture period.

Located in the alluvial plain at the confluence of Brahmaputra and Nianchuhe rivers, Shigatse is 273 kilometers west to Lhasa. At an elevation of 3,800 meters, with the area of 3,875 square kilometers and population of 820,000, it is the second biggest and the only county-level city in Tibet. Also, it is an ancient city in the altiplano with a history of nearly 600 years. It is named Xikasangzhuzi in Tibetan, and Xikazi for short, which stands for ‘a manor of the most fertile soil’


Tashilunpo Monastery


Driving on the road far away from Shigatse, from the west city you can see the gold roof of Tashilunpo Monastery shinning under the sunshine. Experiencing five centuries, it still maintains the magnificent vigor. Tashilhunpo Monastery (meaning auspicious) is one of the Six Big Monasteries of Gelugpa (or Yellow Hat Sect) in China and the biggest Tibetan Gelugpa Buddhism monastery in back Tibet area. Also called the Heap of Glory, the monastery is located at the foot of Drolmari (Tara's Mountain), Shigatse


DAY 12 Shigatse-Lhasa
